Ardmore Flying School has been in the New Zealand aviation industry for over 50 years. We have built strong relationships with industry regulators throughout New Zealand. This ensures the best quality of training is provided in a safe environment.
Our team has involvement in the New Zealand flight training industry lobby organisation (Aviation New Zealand). AFS works with the New Zealand Government through New Zealand Trade & Enterprise to Advance flight training internationally. We do this by promoting New Zealand and working with CAANZ to promote and improve flight training regulations to remain competitive and in line with international aviation best practice.
The Civil Aviation Authority of New Zealand (CAANZ) regulates civil aviation in New Zealand. The CAANZ establishes civil aviation safety and security standards and monitors adherence to those standards. The CAANZ also carries out accident and incident investigations and collates this material to establish an industry-wide safety picture. This becomes the basis of safety initiatives ranging from education campaigns toincreased monitoring and regulatory action.
Aviation New Zealand's mission is to assist members achieve their business goals. This means ensuring members gain from the following Aviation New Zealand activities:
- Advocating for the right regulatory framework to enhance business opportunities and advance a proactive safety culture
- Positioning commercial aviation as the safest form of transporting goods and services
- Actively improving this industry’s reputation
- Working with organisations to enhance the availability of appropriately qualified human resources
- Improving operating margins
NZQA administers the National Certificates of Educational Achievement (NCEAs) for secondary school students and is responsible for the quality assurance of non-university tertiary training providers.
Their key responsibilities are to:
- Develop, register and support the New Zealand Qualifications Framework
- Quality assure non-university tertiary education organisations and their courses, and moderate assessment activities and processes for national qualifications for NZQA-owned unit standards
- Maintain effective liaison with overseas certifying and validating bodies in order to recognise overseas educational and vocational qualifications in New Zealand, and to achieve recognition of New Zealand educational and vocational qualifications overseas
- Act as a standard-setting body
An IELTS certificate is recognised as evidence of proficiency in English by more than 10,000 education and training providers worldwide. Ardmore Flying School requires an:
- IELTS Academic score of 6 (no bands less than 5.5) for the Professional Pilots Programme (DipAv)
- IELTS Academic score of 5.5 (no bands less than 5.0) for the Recreational Programme.

Airways NZ is an integral partner in the safe operation of air traffic in New Zealand skies and well beyond. Airways provides aircraft traffic control around our busy airports and oceanic airspaces as well as across nearly all of New Zealand.
Ardmore Flying School students interact with Airways’ Air Traffic Controllers when flying on cross-country flights around New Zealand and especially whenever flying IFR – on instruments the same as large commercial passenger aircraft. Air Traffic Control (ATC) keeps everyone safe by providing effective and efficient separation of aircraft when flying these commercial routes into and from New Zealand as well as between our busy city airports.
The CAAV is the regulator of aviation in Vietnam. Ardmore Flying School has CAAV approval to train Vietnamese student pilots for entry into airline operations in Vietnam. The CAAV monitor training delivery and standards and complete audits of Ardmore Flying School to ensure the training quality and standard is maintained to their expectations.
The Tertiary Education Commission (TEC) is the NZ Government body that controls student loan funding for domestic NZ students who are studying for an Aviation Diploma or Degree. Ardmore Flying School is one of the largest holder of student loan funding for aviation training and as such has a close working relationship with TEC to ensure compliance in meeting TEC requirements to maintain quality training and effective use of the Government’s loan money to aviation students.
